BUTTER SPRITZ COOKIES

It's time to start thinking of making some christmas cookies.  I found this recipe for these spritz cookies at mandy's recipe box.  She used a old fashion "cooky press" to make her spritz cookies.  I used the same one that I got from my mother' n law a few years back. Showing my age but I would make christmas cookies with my mother and we used this cooky press also.  You can find these at flea markets, yard sales etc so if you don't have one then see about finding one.   These cookies are small and I especially liked the idea of adding the cream cheese which was different to me.   I didn't count how many it makes but my best quess would be about 8-9 dozen.  But, I did eat a little of the dough....

Thank you Mandy

2 1/4 cup flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 cup butter
3 ounces cream cheese
1 cup sugar
1 egg yolk
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp orange or lemon zest ( optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In your mixing bowl add the cream cheese and butter and mix.  Sift all the dry ingredients together and set aside.  Add the sugar and egg yolk and mix.  Beat until light and fluffy.  Add the vanilla and the zest if using.  Add the dry ingredients a little at a time and mix gently.  Fill the cooky press with cookie dough and choose what disc you are going to use.  Sprinkle with colored sugars before baking.  I used candied cherries for the center of some of the cookies. You could also use food coloring and tint your cookie dough.   Bake on ungreased cookie sheet for about 12 -15 minutes till they are golden brown.  Remove at once to a cooling rack...........enjoy     recipe compliments of Mandy's Recipe Box
If the dough is too soft and warm it may not stick to the baking sheet, put the dough in the refrigerator for a little until it gets cool and try again.

Be happy    Andi

  2. Spritz cookies are THE Christmas cookie IMHO. It was the one staple cookie that my mom always made (and still does) with her Mirro cookie press. I've got one just like hers and I think it works better than any of the plastic ones I've tried. My recipe is the one that came with the press a million years ago, but I've never used one with cream cheese. It sounds good though, and would be fun to try. I like the trees best. :)

  3. Hi Andi, this is the recipe that I use, too, and I think it's the BEST...love, love, love it!! I used to have the old Mirro cookie press, but mine bit the dust and I had to get a new one. I still kept the old one just in case I find one at a garage sale that I could use parts from.
